It is an instrument for measuring
precipitation within a period of time. The commonly used rain gauge consists of a
collector placed above a funnel leading into a container where the accumulated water
is stored between the observation times. The stored water is either collected in a
measure or poured out from the container into a measure, or its level in the
container is measured directly with a graduated stick.
