
At 2 p.m. on 10 July 2009, a tropical depression formed at the northwest of Luzon (the Philippines) and was located about 730km east-southeast of Macao (19.2°N, 119.9°E, central pressure 1000 hPa), it was moving west-northwestwards at 12km/h with its maximum sustained wind speed near the centre 54km/h.
At 4 p.m. on 11 July, the tropical depression was 220km south-southeast of Macao over South China Sea, developed into a tropical storm (20.2°N, 113.8°E, central pressure 998 hPa) and was named Soudelor (0905) with its maximum sustained wind near the centre 67km/h, it was moving west-northwestwards or westwards at 26km/h. Soudelor was approaching Leizhou Peninsula after skirting 220km south of Macao before dawn next day.
At 5 a.m. on 13 July, Soudelor made landfall over the northern part of Wenchang in Hainan Province. The landward Soudelor weakened into a tropical depression and dissipated gradually.
