At 8 p.m. on 15 July 2009, a tropical depression formed at the east of the Philippines over Pacific (14.7°N, 127.2°E, central pressure 1000 hPa), which was moving northwestwards at a speed of 15km/h with its maximum sustained wind speed near the centre 54km/h. At 8 p.m. on 16 July, the tropical depression developed into a tropical storm (17.4°N, 124.6°E, central pressure 998 hPa) at the northeast of Luzon (the Philippines) and was named Molave (0906). It was moving north-northwestwards at a speed of 18km/h with its maximum sustained wind near the centre 67km/h. At 2 p.m. on 17 July, Molave enhanced into a severe tropical storm at Balintang Channel (19.6°N, 122.4°E, central pressure 987hPa). It was moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 20km/h with its maximum sustained wind near the centre 92km/h. After passing the Balintang Channel, Molave arrived South China Sea. At 2 p.m. on 18 July, Molave intensified into a typhoon about 360km east-southeast of Macao (21.8°N, 117.0°E, central pressure 973hPa). It was moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 22km/h with its maximum sustained wind near the center 118km/h, approaching east coast of Guangdong Province. At 1 a.m. on 19 July, Molave made landfall at 120km east-northeast of Macao, nearby Shenzhen, it was moving west-northwestwards at 25km/h. It moved further inland with the same direction after landfall. At 5 a.m, Molave skirted 60km north of Macao, then weakened into a severe tropical storm due to the terrain friction effect at 6 a.m. At 2 p.m., Molave weakened further into a tropical storm at the west-northwest of Macao, then dissipated rapidly.
