At 8 a.m. on 1 August 2009, a tropical depression formed at the east of the Philippines over Pacific (16.0°N, 127.0°E, central pressure 996 hPa), which was moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 18km/h with its maximum sustained wind speed near the centre 54km/h.
At 2 a.m. on 2 August, the tropical depression landed Luzon (the Philippines). It reached South China Sea after crossing Luzon. It was moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 25km/h within 800km of Macao.
At dawn on 3 August, the moving direction changed to northwards significantly. It was approaching the south China coastal area by the moving speed of 10km/h. At 8 p.m., it intensified into a tropical storm at about 340km southeast of Macao (19.6°N, 115.5°E, central pressure 990 hPa) and was named Goni (0907). It was getting close to Macao by moving north-northwestwards at a speed of 13km/h with its maximum sustained wind near the centre 67km/h.
At 8 p.m. on 4 August, Goni enhanced into a severe tropical storm at 75km south-southwest of Macao (21.5°N, 113.4°E, central pressure 987hPa). It was moving north-northwestwards at a speed of 10km/h with its maximum sustained wind near the centre 92km/h. At 10 p.m., Goni skirted about 60km south-southwest of Macao, then the moving direction turned to generally westwards.
At about 6 a.m. on 5 August, Goni made landfall nearby Taishan, Guangdong Province, then weakened into a tropical storm (21.9°N, 112.5°, central pressure 993hPa). It was moving westwards slowly with its maximum sustained wind near the centre 79km/h. Goni weakened further into a tropical depression and moved around the west coast of Guangdong at 8 p.m. on the next day.
Goni re-organized into a tropical storm and was moving south-southwestwards slowly in the morning on 8 August. At 8 a.m. on 9 August, the low level circulation centre of Goni turned to eastwards and then weakened into a tropical depression. At 8 p.m., Goni weakened further into a low-pressure area over the northern part of South China Sea.
