At 14:00 on the 17th August, 2008, a tropical depression formed over the Northwest Pacific (15.0¢XN, 139.0¢XE, central pressure 1008 hPa), which moved westwards at a speed of about 18 km/h. At 08:00 the next day, the tropical depresson developed into a tropical storm (15.8¢XN, 133.4¢XE, central pressure 1000 hPa) and was named ¡§Nuri¡¨ (0812) with its maximum sustained wind near the center 65 km/h and was moving westwards at about 28 km/h. At 8 p.m. on the same day, ¡§Nuri¡¨ intensified into a severe tropical storm (16.0oN, 130.1oE, central pressure 987 hPa) with maximum sustained wind near the center 92 km/h and was moving continuously to the west at 30 km/h. At 08:00 on the 19th, ¡§Nuri¡¨ reinforced and became a typhoon rapidly (17.1¢XN, 126.8¢XE, central pressure 973 hPa) with maximum sustained wind near the center 118 km/h and was moving west-northwestwards at 30 km/h. After passing through the Luzon Strait, ¡§Nuri¡¨ entered within about 800 km of Macao; the standby signal no.1 was hoisted at 20:00 on day 20, at that moment, ¡§Nuri¡¨ was centered at about 790km east-southeast of Macao (19.4¢XN, 120.5¢XS, central pressure 956 hPa) with its maximum sustained wind near the center 144 km/h, but its moving speed slightly reduced to 12 km/h and moved west-northwestwards. As of 00:30 on 22, Strong Wind Signal no.3 was hoisted by SMG. ¡§Nuri¡¨ was about 310 km east-southeast of Macao (20.6¢XN, 116.0¢XE, central pressure 965 hPa, maximum sustained wind near center 131 km/h), moved west-northwestwards at 12 km/h and was going a step further to the Guangdong coastal region. At 12:30 the same day, Gale Signal no.8 NW was hoisted. ¡§Nuri¡¨ centered at about 140 km east of Macao (21.9¢XN, 114.8¢XE, central pressure 973 hPa, maximum sustained wind near center 118 km/h) and moved northwest at 15 km/h. As the storm level wind of ¡§Nuri¡¨ gradually affected Macao and moved forward to the Pearl River Estuary, as a result that local winds strengthened significantly. In the late afternoon of 22, ¡§Nuri¡¨ made a landfall in Hong Kong and consequently weakened into a severe tropical storm (22.3¢XN, 114.3¢XE, central pressure 981 hPa, maximum sustained wind near center 106 km/h) at 17:00 due to the influence of topography friction and lessening of water content. Before ¡¨Nuri¡¨ skirted at about 60 km northeast of Macao, it moved northwestwards at a speed of about 15 km/h and Macao was affected by winds from southwest accordingly, Gale Signal no.8 NW was replaced by no.8 SW at 20:00. At midnight of the 23rd, ¡§Nuri¡¨ further weakened inland to a tropical storm and hence local winds were moderating, the Gale Signal no.8 SW was replaced by the no.3 Strong Wind Signal at 00:30. ¡§Nuri¡¨ abated again overland and eventually became a tropical depression at 09:00, all typhoon signals were lowered at 11:00.
