
On the 29 th Sept 2008, a tropical depression located to the southeast of the Philippines over the Pacific and was moving west-northwestwards at 19 km/h. 8 a.m. on the next day, it intensified into a tropical storm (11.0¢XN, 127.2¢XE, central pressure 1000 hPa) and was named ¡§Higos¡¨(0817). It had its maximum sustained wind near the center 65km/h and moved to the northwest with speed of 35km/h.
At 8 a.m. on 1st October, the tropical storm located to the east of the Philippines (14.0¢XN, 123.4¢XE, central pressure 998 hPa) with its maximum sustained wind near the center 67 km/h, was moving northwest with reduced speed to 15 km/h and crossed the Philipplines. Thereafter, ¡§Higos¡¨ kept moving northwest or west-northwestwards with speed 20 to 30 km/h and entered the South China Sea.
At 4 p.m. on 3rd October, ¡§Higos¡¨ was about 480 km southwest of Macao (18.6¢XN, 110.8¢XE, central pressure 1000 hPa), it changed its direction to the north and was moving towards the Hainan with speed 15 km/h. Around 10 p.m on the same day, ¡§Higos¡¨made a landfall in the vicinity of Wenchang in Hainan Province (19.5¢XN, 111.0¢XE, central pressure 998 hPa); at 11 a.m. on the next day, tropical storm ¡§Higos¡¨weakened into a tropical depression, it continuously moved to the north and landed again near Wuchuan in Guangdong Province. ¡§Higos¡¨further weakened into an area of low pressure after it had made a landfall to the west of Guangdong, turned to east direction and consequently brought heavy rains to the Pearl River Delta region.
