At 08:00 on the 19 September, 2008, a tropical depression formed over the Northwest Pacific (14.4¢XN, 135.2¢XE, central pressure 1006 hPa) and was moving west with velocity 24 km/h; twelve hours later, the tropical depression developed into a tropical storm (13.8¢XN, 132.7¢XE, central pressure 998 hPa) and was named ¡§Hagupit¡¨(0814), it was moving at 20km/h with its maximum sustained wind near the center 65 km/h.
At 08:00 on the day 20, ¡§Hagupit¡¨ intensified into a severe tropical storm nearby to the east of the Philippines over the Pacific (13.3¢XN, 130.5¢XE, central pressure 990 hPa), its speed slightly reduced to 11 km/h and was moving westwards with its maximum sustained wind near the center 93 km/h.; At 20:00 on the next day, ¡§Hagupit¡¨ further strengthened into a typhoon to the northeast of Luzon (18.1¢XN, 125.7¢XE, central pressure 973 hPa) with its maximum sustained wind near the center 118 km/h and it speeded up to 22 km/h and was moving towards the northwest continuously; after passing the northeastern Luzon, ¡§Hagupit¡¨ was moving west or west-northwestwards to the South China Sea.
¡§Hagupit¡¨ slightly accelerated over the South China Sea and was getting closer to south China coast; at 23:00 on the day 23, it skirted about 140 km to the south of Macao (20.8¢XN, 113.4¢XE, central pressure 937 hPa) with its maximum sustained wind near the center 173 km/h.
At 06:45 on the day 24, ¡§Hagupit¡¨ landed in the vicinity of Dianbai County of the western Guangdong Province. Due to the influence of topography friction, ¡§Hagupit¡¨ weakened into a severe tropical storm at 14:00 (21.9¢XN, 109.4¢XE) with its maximum sustained wind near the center 112 km/h. ¡§Hagupit¡¨ weakened rapidly after making the landfall, it became a tropical storm at 20:00 that night (22.1¢XN, 108.6¢XE) with maximum sustained wind near the center reduced to 75 km/h and dissipated gradually.
