
JELAWAT developed as a tropical depression near over the South China Sea (14.5¢XN,118.2¢XE), southeast of Xisha on 26th June evening. It kept on moving with a speed of more than 20km/h towards the northwest and intensified further. The tropical depression entered the area where is 800km around Macao in the early morning on the next day and attained tropical storm strength near 17.3¢XN,114.7¢XE around 06UTC. The central pressure dropped to 1000hPa and the maximum sustained wind speed near its center reached 65km/h. The moving speed lowered gradually and moving direction changed to west-northwesterly which headed towards the region near Hainan province and Leizhou Peninsular.
In the early morning on 28th June, after crossing the central part of South China Sea, JELAWAT veered in a north-northwest direction when it shifted to the area about 540 km south-southwest of Macao(18.4¢XN,112.4¢XE). It skirted the northeastern coast of Hainan in the afternoon and made landfall over Zhanjiang in morning on next day. It weakened into a tropical depression and kept on moving northwesterly. Eventually, it shifted to the inland further and dissipated gradually.
