KOMPASU developed as a tropical depression, from a low-pressure area, over the western North Pacific to the east of Luzon (near 19.0¢XN, 136.5¢XE) around 06 UTC on 11th July and drifted westwards to west-northwestwards, approaching Luzon Strait gradually.
Three days later, it deepened into a tropical storm around 00 UTC on 14th near 20.9¢XN, 124.7¢XE, with central pressure of 998 hPa and central maximum wind of 65 km/h.
KOMPASU traversed Luzon Strait on 14th and entered South China Sea on 15th, striking to the west initially. It then veered to the northwest towards the Pearl River Delta on 16th. It finally made landfall near Hong Kong around 09 UTC on 16th and speedily filled up into a tropical depression afterwards.
Between 14th and 15th, KOMPASU once reached its maximum strength of 83- km/h-central maximum wind and 990-hPa-central pressure. It was closest to Macao at about 95 km (near 22.3¢XN, 114.4¢XE) to the east-northeast around 08 UTC on 16th.
