
Around 00 UTC on 16th July, KONI formed as a tropical depression over the Pacific to the east of the Philippines (near 9.0¢XN, 130.5¢XE) and drifted to the west-northwest at a speed of 6 to 10 km/h.
After traversed middle Philippines on 17th, it entered the South China Sea on the following day.
It intensified into a tropical storm near 12.4¢XN, 119.3¢XE around 06 UTC on 18th, with central pressure of 998 hPa and central maximum wind of 65 km/h. It then turned slightly to the northwest towards Hainan.
Two days later, it became a severe tropical storm near 16.2¢XN and 114.9¢XE around 00 UTC on 20th, with central pressure of 985 hPa and central maximum wind of 92 km/h and approached Hainan steadily.
KONI was closest to Macao at about 470 km (near 18.5¢XN, 111.1¢XE) to the south-southwest around 08 UTC on 21st.
It then crossed southern Hainan and weakened into a tropical storm over Gulf of Beibu around 18 UTC on the same day of 21st.
KONI quickly downgraded into a tropical depression overland and continued to dissipate.
