YUTU formed as a tropical depression to the northeast of Luzon and drifted westwards quickly at about 38 km/h on 22nd July. It intensified into a tropical storm when traversing Balintang Channel at around 12 UTC on the next day. Continued tracking westwards, it became a severe tropical storm over the South China Sea about 400 km southeast of Macao at around 06 UTC on 24th July. Three hours later, it rapidly attained typhoon intensity at around 09 UTC near Dongsha, with central pressure of 960 hPa and central maximum wind of 150 km/h. The closest approach of this typhoon was about 160 km to the south and south-southwest of Macao from around 05 to 08 UTC on 25th July. It then veered slightly to the west-northwest towards Leizhou Peninsula. YUTU weakened into a severe tropical storm at around 18 UTC on 25th July before making landfall between Zhanjiang and Yangjiang. It further downgraded into a tropical storm at around 03 UTC on 26th July while moving onshore and became a tropical depression at around 09 UTC over land on the same day.
