A low depression was formed west of Luzon in the South China Sea on 4th Sept. It moved northeast at the beginning and was named Wukong(0016) on 6th Sept. It upgraded into a tropical storm and turned the direction into northwest at the same afternoon. After the track of a curve was made, it intensified into a severe tropical storm. At 20 UTC on 6th Sept., it was 480 km southeast of Macau (19.1 N, 116.8 E), and was moving under the velocity of 9 km/h westward. In such a favorable circumstances, Wukong further upgraded into a typhoon with the central pressure around 970 hPa in the early morning of 8th Sept. It kept the track westward steadily. By 04 UTC of 8th Sept., it passed by South China Sea, which is the shortest distance (340 km) away from Macau. Wukong approached southeast of Hainan and weaken into a severe tropical storm on 9th Sept. After passing by Hainan, it moved straight forward westering. It made a landing in Vietnam on 10th Sept and degenerated into a tropical storm. It dissipated over land quickly later on
