A low depression was formed nearby Dongsha in the South China Sea before dawn on 28th August. It moved SW very slowly initially and was named Maria(0013) later that night. It stayed steadily about 300 km southeast of Macao for the early morning of 29th August and started moving southward later on. Maria intensified into tropical storm at 09 UTC with the central pressure 994 hPa on 29th August. It then moved toward east-southeast slowly, further away from Macao and stayed almost stationary at about 500 km southeast from Macao that night. It remained the same position through 30th August. Maria started retraced northward from 31st August, it aimed at South China coastal area and was getting closer to Macao. By 08 UTC, it returned to the location where it was formed. After moving further northward, Maria intensified into severe tropical storm at 18UTC on 31st August. At 2100UTC that day, it made a landfall over the coastal areas of Shanwei. Over land, it degenerated into a tropical storm on 1st September and moved under the velocity of 16 km/h towards northwest. After that, Maria weakened and dissipated.
